“Remembering the Earthquakes”: Supporters of Frackfree America National Coalition, based in Youngstown, Ohio, will attend a prayer service conducted by Reverend Monica Beasley-Martin to commemorate the upcoming sixth anniversary of the now-famous December 31, 2011 Youngstown, Ohio, 4.0 magnitude man-made earthquake linked to a fracking waste injection well.
Concerned citizens will gather for the prayer on public property on Thursday, December 28, 2017, at 1:00 PM to 2 PM at the gazebo on the village green at Brookfield Center, Brookfield, Ohio 44403
Supporters of Frackfree America National Coalition, (FANC) based in Youngstown, Ohio, will attend a prayer service conducted by Reverend Monica Beasley-Martin, of Defenders of the Earth Outreach Mission, to commemorate the upcoming sixth anniversary of the now-famous December 31, 2011 Youngstown, Ohio, 4.0 magnitude man-made earthquake linked to a fracking waste injection well.
Concerned citizens will gather for the prayer on public property on Thursday, December 28, 2017, at 1:00 PM to 2 PM at the gazebo on the village green at Brookfield Center, Brookfield, Ohio 44403.
All media and the public are invited to attend.
A focus of the event will be raising public awareness of the need for the Ohio Department of Natural Resources (ODNR) to immediately, legally stop five proposed fracking waste injection wells planned to be located in Brookfield, Ohio way too near family homes, businesses, and government buildings. ODNR must halt this proposed injection well operation to protect the public health, safety, and welfare of Brookfield and the entire region.
Frackfree America National Coalition (FANC) says that ODNR needs to face the reality that our region is now earthquake-prone. Our geology is not suitable for injection. Permitting injection wells in this area is essentially gambling with the public health, safety, and welfare. That is irresponsible, to say the least.
Many local residents remember the series of earthquakes, in 2011, associated with the December 31, 2011 magnitude 4.0 man-made earthquake in Youngstown, Ohio. It took quite a while for ODNR to acknowledge the connection between the quakes and the injection well.
Amazingly, regulators were denying that quake was linked to the Northstar 1 injection well up until at least November 7, 2011, according to the Vindicator, who reported that on that date, “ODNR Geologist Tom Tomastik tells WKSU there is no link between earthquakes and injection well.”[1]
The Vindicator reported that on January 12, 2012 “ODNR officials tell about 500 residents at the Covelli Centre that they are still unsure of injection well’s ties to earthquakes.”[2]
After the now-famous New Year’s Eve Youngstown 4.0 quake, some people suggested that ODNR learned from those events and implemented a new approach and increased seismic monitoring in an effort to prevent more quakes.
Nevertheless, despite ODNR’s new approach and requirements for seismic monitoring, our area still had more fracking and injection well-linked earthquakes, in 2014, in Poland Township and Weathersfield, after ODNR supposedly had learned how to “manage” them based upon the 4.0 quake experience and data. Earthquakes cannot be controlled with one hundred percent certainty.
We don’t have confidence that ODNR, based upon its track record, will be able to decrease the risk of potentially large and damaging earthquakes in our region via regulations, seismic monitoring, or permit conditions. There are too many unknowns regarding man-made earthquakes. This is just too big a risk to take.
ODNR’s approach didn’t work before to prevent earthquakes in Weathersfield and Poland Township, so why should Ohioans believe that it will work now? It cannot work, and many people of this region do not want to risk it by becoming human subjects for a man-made earthquake prevention experiment.
If state regulators could successfully stop earthquakes, they would have done so by now in Oklahoma where the number of injection well and fracking related man-made earthquakes has greatly increased since about 2009 and include a magnitude 5.7 and possibly a magnitude 5.8 quake that scientists link to injection wells.
According to an article in Scientific American:
“Even if Oklahoma shut down all its wells today, many experts say the quakes would continue. ‘We’re trying to calculate how much energy is in the system right now and how long it may continue on—and at the current earthquake rate the numbers are very big,’ says Daniel McNamara, a seismologist at the USGS Geologic Hazards Science Center in Golden, Colo.
Pressed for details, he paused. Then he added: ‘It’s hundreds of years.’ "[3]
Imagine that – “hundreds of years.”
If regulators can’t adequately stop man-made earthquakes in Oklahoma, and they cannot or they would have done so by now, why should we believe that they can control things adequately in Ohio, or anywhere? We should not.
ODNR must be proactive and scientific and halt the injection wells, or we believe we could face a similar outcome, as in Oklahoma, with huge numbers of quakes that cannot be stopped. Our hearts go out to the people of Oklahoma.
Will ODNR do the right thing and halt the five proposed Brookfield injection wells? They must. Lawfully stopping them is the only way to effectively protect the public, health, safety, welfare, property values, and private property rights of Brookfield and the entire region.
